Emma Tolander is a dancer and not a romancer. She moves very convincingly because every move she does is true. Her interests in life is hard work, braveness, weakness, empathy, adaptation and love. All of this she keeps in her muscles and in her thoughts as she moves through the world.

Emma grew up a physically skilled yet very shy kid in Stockholms suburbs and forests. Stronger and faster than all the kids at school, she climbed trees, read books and competed in track and field. In dance, she found female community and a sense of enjoying her own physicality and sexuality.

She works with the feminist ÖFA-collective in Stockholm currently touring the megahit ÖFA: Danceoke.  The works in her career that has made the deepest impact on her is among others the EDIE&EDIE Project, in which she and her friend and colleague Amanda Apetrea dug deep into female sexuality and dance traditions, her work in Finland where she danced with the always problematic mover Sebastian López-Lehto, and The Great Beyond Project with Peter Mills who is a truly unique artist. In her degree project at the Master program in choreography at DOCH in Stockholm 2014, she danced together with her beloved intelligent and beautiful friend Martin Lervik.

Emma draws inspiration from fighting, poetry, housewives and female athletes and their blood, sweat and tears.

WHAT DOES THE SITE RESIDENCY ENABLE YOU TO DO?
It will give me a physical place for my work digital project Kroppskvinnan. An office to write in, a studio to dance in, a place to arrange happenings in, a platform to exist in and a geographic point where to locate my work in the world.

Above all, I hope it will support me in developing a specific solo artist-voice, and let me dare make that voice brave.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT?
Now I do highly personal dances, based on a feministic analysis of society. I’ve for a while been busy with figuring out what the concept of improvisation is and how I can use and has always been using it in life and dance. Also with training and competing in brazilian jiu jitsu and with working with movement and body with kids at the youth library Tiotretton at Kulturhuset Stockholm.

During the autumn of 2018, I am launching the blog Kroppskvinnan. It will be an artistic blog on the subject of body and training.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FURTHER DEVELOP DURING YOUR RESIDENCY AT SITE?
I hope to establish the blog Kroppskvinnan as a continuous artistic practice of mine.

The residency aims to enable artistic and organizational development, through free access to office space and studio time as well as counselling. Please contact Anne-Sofie Ericsson for more information.
