Pia Pohjakallio is a freelance dancer and choreographer with flamenco as her speciality. The Stockholmbased artist also acts as a co-producer in different works, and is the driving force behind Stockholms new ”tablao”, flamencostage: FlamencoFredag@Odenplan. Pia believes in the true and direct expression of flamenco and is convinced of flamencos strengths as an universal art form. Her work is often characterized by a close co-operation with musicians and different art forms. The interactiveness of flamenco is what lies closest to heart.
WHAT DOES THE SITE RESIDENCY ENABLE YOU TO DO?
»The SITE residency is a true possibility for me to sharpen my practice, both artistically as well as administratively, offering creative surroundings and a platform where contemporary scenic arts are in focus. I am truly looking forward to taking part of the OPM course offered to us in the residency, as well as of course the meeting space that the residency offers. Since my practice often takes place on music venues and concert halls, I see this residency as a chance to build (more) bridges and understanding between the dance- and the music-worlds for myself as well as my colleagues.«
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT?
»Right now I’m in the middle of projects very dear to me! We have sent in the first applications to finance the publication of a book filled with translations of flamencoverse from spanish to swedish, a book which is meant to give a dramaturgy to a later scenic work during 2016. We are looking through video material to prepare our work ¡RÅ! to meet new arenas, as well as taking our process with ORIGEN further to make our Peru-invitation happen. The dancing practice is now filled with preparations for the coming FlamencoFredag@Odenplan as well as planning for the fall.«
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FURTHER DEVELOP DURING YOUR RESIDENCY AT SITE?
»I would like to develop the ability to organize my work towards a more ”user friendly practise filled” direction, and to further enhance my network in the scenic arts scene nationally as well as internationally. The SITE-house breathes contemporarity and space for creative thought and I’m happy to be a part of it. Development has often been a circular movement for me, discovering and rediscovering of ideas in new light, deepening the process continually – something I’m sure will take place in many areas of my practice during the coming year.«
The residency aims to enable artistic and organizational development, through free access to office space and studio time as well as counselling. Please contact Anne-Sofie Ericssonfor more information.
