Allison Ahl

Allison Ahl is a stage artist, dancer, choreographer, performer. She was first educated at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm where she graduated in 2005. She has worked and collaborated with Swedish and international choreographers in Stockholm, Paris , Malmö and London , in a variety of contexts within institutions and as a freelancer.

She has in recent years extended her partnership with choreographers Björn Säfsten and Sebastian Lingserius, and during 2014/2015 she was a driving part of the choreographic platform KASS production.

She has created two solos in 2010 and 2012. Where the two worked around the idea of imagination and possible mechanisms for the creation of the “creative machine.” As an artist and choreographer Allison is interested in the performativity around the notions of presence and awareness, movement and gesture, and the way we build ourselves and our surroundings. Where gesture not only stands as ”personal movement”, language or symbol but rather also as different notions , to carry, to support, to direct, to stand and to create towards. Inside we find the gesture as a relational tool to create inner and outer transition.

As a choreographer she is interested in the use of choreography crossing different fields of aesthetics and art forms. Where the physical, the body , the dance is also overtaken by or taking over other types of materiality.

WHAT DOES THE SITE RESIDENCY ENABLE YOU TO DO?
SITE gives me amongst other things a context to work from, a group of colleagues focusing on the production of art from whom to learn from, exchange ideas with. It gives me the opportunity to focus on managing and organizing my work as freelance artist. The access to a working office, studio spaces to use, production support and their expertise and experience on the field of production and networking.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT?
I am currently developing new work, a choreographic and explorative project which aims at investigating several structures of perception. The project is a collaboration between me and a sound designer aswell as a fabric creator amongst others, where we would like to create a space where choreography, body, and person are created and exchanged through different mediums. The transaction of idea, body, concept or form. The project is starting with a first studio period in June and will continue throughout the year of 2016 with several presentations on the way with a premiere in 2017.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FURTHER DEVELOP DURING YOUR RESIDENCY AT SITE?
Through my residency at SITE I wish to  go further in my investigation of methods needed for the project I am working on. To further develop a range of choreographic methods aswell as activities connected to the project. I wish to take this opportunity to give myself a base to work from. To work on my very own structure, but also improve my abilities to administrate, produce, write, and build on my artistic aims. I think that working together with and at SITE will bring a new perspective on the production aspect of my current work.

The residency aims to enable artistic and organizational development, through free access to office space and studio time as well as counselling. Please contact Anne-Sofie Ericsson for more information.
