DETESTED sheds light on men’s violence against women. Created and choreographed by Linnéa Sonka for four street dancers, the performance takes the audience through the three phases of the normalization process: boundaries are shifted and erased, women are isolated, and the cycle between violence and affection becomes routine. These elements are crucial to understanding how violence becomes normalized and how self-esteem and identity are gradually eroded. An intimate experience of the normalization process, unfolding gradually and in close proximity.
Through movement and research, concepts such as control, manipulation, shame, crazymaking,
power, and violence are translated into a choreographic language. The work focuses on the body as a site where these mechanisms take place – physically, psychologically, and relationally.
The work moves from freedom and subtle shifts into increasing intensity, where space contracts, energy builds, and control over the body and space gradually changes and is renegotiated. Repetition, shifting dynamics, and changes in space expose how control is established and maintained over time – how something almost invisible becomes undeniable.
The work is developed through an ongoing choreographic process, where movement material is generated, tested, and reshaped in relation to these mechanisms. This is a work-in-progress. An ongoing choreographic investigation into men’s violence against women and the normalization processes that sustain it.
Violence against women is present in every society around the world and takes many forms. Globally, one in three women – approximately 736 million – is subjected to physical or sexual violence by a man at some point in her life. Nearly 38% of murders of women worldwide are committed by intimate partners.
